Top: a female northern harrier hovers over a potential meal near Patterson Bay, Illinois. Contrast this picture with the series of pictures of the male (below) and on the northern harrier page of the pictorial guide. The male was hunting along a railroad right-of-way which was next to a busy road. Due to extensive use of land for crops, the only grasslands available for hunting may be along railroads or highways.

Note: Northern harriers are often seen with their counterpart, the short-eared owl. If you see harriers, be alert for short-eared owls as well.
