All Creatures Great and Small...

What are the odds? Some kids were bouncing on a trampoline, tossing a basketball up into the air. When the ball hit a tree limb, down came two tiny baby birds. We identified them as hummingbirds from pictures in the latest issue of "Wildlife Rehabilitation Today" magazine. While neither baby bird survived, we wanted to share the pictures with you. They teach us a lot about the struggle for life that goes on everyday in our own back yards.

The fact that creatures this small can survive and grow into adults seems to us to be a miracle. By the way, adult ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate each fall across the Gulf Of Mexico. That's a 600 mile trip non-stop! While there are many types of hummingbirds, only the ruby-throated hummingbird breeds east of the Mississippi.
