The partnership between the Illinois Raptor Center and the
Girl Scouts of America Shemamo Council would not be possible
without the support of many fine organizations.
The project got its start with a Bright Idea Grant from Illinois
Power in 2002. The Lumpkin Foundation generously matched that
grant to provide us with a solid foundation. Funds have also
been provided by the Girl Scouts of America -Linking Girls to
the Land Program.
The Illinois Native Plant Society-Central Chapter donated
$800 in 2003 to seed the new 1.5 acre prairie. Funds to seed
another acre of prairie and savanna came from the Illinois Conservation
Foundation in 2003. More recently, the Illinois Schoolyard Habitat
Grant from the Illinois Departmet of Natural Resources allowed
us to purchase bare root plants and trees. The IDNR also loaned
specialized planting equipment and donated prairie grass seed
throught its Acres for Wildlife Program.
More work is planned for the coming years. Funds to maintain
the plantings through fire management and control of invasive
species will be needed. Woodland wildflower reintroduction is
also planned for wooded areas.
Special thanks are in order to all volunteers who are helping
to create a top-flight educational experience for the Girl Scouts.
